History of the Byzantine Empire((Don't mind me, this is for Byz's profile so people stop complaining about me just giving the watered-down version of her history--
Most of this information comes from my year-old notes from seventh-grade history class.))
So the Roman Empire was having some major issues. Like, it was really obvious that it was going to fall soon. So from 324 to 330, this emperor, Constantine I (more commonly known as Constantine the Great), named Byzantium, a city in Greece, as the new capital of the Roman Empire, renaming the city Nova Roma (New Rome). After his death, people called it Constantinople (City of Constantine) to honor him. And so the empire had two halves; the eastern and the western.
Then, in 395, Emperor Theodosius I died. He was the last emperor to rule over both the eastern and the western halves of the empire, which is why I consider it to be Byz's birthday instead of 330.

yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
